Can I Replace AGM with Flooded?

There are two types of primary starting batteries, flooded and AGM. If your Freightliner Sprinter 3500 came from the manufacturer with an AGM battery installed, you must replace it with another AGM battery. Failure to do so will have a negative impact on your van's performance.

If your Sprinter 3500 originally had a flooded battery installed, you can replace it with another flooded battery, or you can upgrade to an AGM battery.

Which Is Better, AGM or Flooded?

AGM batteries outperform flooded batteries in most categories. An AGM battery provides more power, making it easier to start your vehicle in almost any climate. AGM batteries are also designed to last longer and recharge faster than a flooded option.

The one advantage a flooded battery has over an AGM option is cost. Flooded batteries cost less upfront. This can be a bit misleading, however. Since AGM batteries typically last longer, many users save money in the long run with an AGM battery.

Freightliner Sprinter 3500 FAQs

Freightliner Sprinter vans have two different batteries onboard, a primary starting battery and an auxiliary battery. The starting battery is responsible for starting your engine. The auxiliary battery has two functions. It helps to backup your starting battery and provides additional power for onboard technology like start-stop systems.

The battery in your Sprinter should last around 3-5 years. Factors like the climate you drive in and your driving habits play a part in how long your battery will last. For tips on how to maximize your battery life, read our blog entitled, "6 Things That Can Drain Your Car Battery  ."

The cost of a replacement battery will depend on the type of battery you select. Flooded batteries are the most affordable, however, many Sprinter vans require an AGM battery. If your van came with an AGM installed originally, you need to replace it with another AGM option.
