What Do I Need to Know When Buying a New Car Battery?

Battery Size

  • Auto batteries are assigned a size using the Battery Council International (BCI) group size standard.
  • You can find the correct BCI group size for a Buick Regal by checking your owner's manual or by looking the information up online.

CCA Rating

  • Cold Cranking Amps (CCAs) tell you how well an auto battery will perform in freezing temperatures.
  • Vehicle manufacturers provide a recommended CCA rating for each model they produce.
  • You can find the CCA rating for a Buick Regal in your owner's manual or by searching online.
  • You can buy a battery with a higher CCA rating than the manufacturer recommends but do not buy one with a lower CCA rating.

What are the Differences Between Flooded and AGM Batteries?

  • There are 2 types of auto batteries: flooded & AGM
  • A flooded battery is an unsealed, basic auto battery. It is the most affordable type, but may require you to periodically add distilled water to the electrolyte inside it.
  • An AGM battery costs more upfront, but is designed to last 2-3X longer than a flooded option. This can end up saving you money in the long run.
  • AGM batteries are completely sealed and require no additional maintenance.
  • AGM batteries are also more powerful than flooded batteries, which makes it easier to start your engine in extreme conditions.
  • If your Buick Regal came with an AGM battery, you must replace it with another AGM battery.
