Battery business proving to be recession-resilient

In an economic climate where businesses can struggle to stay alive, commercial and retail provider Batteries Plus says it is charging ahead with a substantial growth in sales, thanks to customers looking to save a buck or two.

Selling more than a million batteries a week and serving 1.5 million customers annually, the Hartland, Wis.-based company plans to expand in Houston over the next two to five years, adding 10 more stores to the existing three locations.

“We look for areas that have a strong residential population and good business density and Houston has both of these,” said John Twist, vice president of franchise and business development. “We believe the market will support many additional stores. Batteries Plus is a privately-held company and is not required to disclose its finances.
