Batteries Plus opens in Auburn Hills
The Oakland Press - April 4, 2012 - By Kathy Blake
Air Force veteran and retired automotive executive, John Kent, 59, has opened a second Batteries Plus franchise location.
The new 2,600 square-foot store is at 3987 Baldwin Road in the Shoppes at Baldwin Square in Auburn Hills. In 2010, Kent went back to work after retirement, by opening his first Batteries Plus in White Lake. His wife, Joanne joined him after 18 years as a stay-at-home mom with their three children. She runs the daily operations at the stores. The family lives in Highland Township.
When asked if he plans to retire anytime soon, John replied to the contrary, "I'm already looking at maybe another store in Rochester, probably a year from now."
Batteries Plus is a national chain serving both retail and business customers as a one-stop source for all sorts of batteries and light bulbs. It has developed a distinctive niche with its comprehensive selection of batteries, battery-related products, light bulbs and technical support.
The new Auburn Hills location provides the equipment and expertise on-site to assemble, test, condition and design custom battery packs for rechargeable household and commercial products.
Products include literally thousands of batteries for thousands of items, ranging from common items such as watches, cars, digital cameras, laptops and cell phones to those hard-to-find batteries for old toys and electronic devices.
"In an age of increased portability, our society is dependent on batteries," Kent said.
Kent and his staff will test car batteries and charging and starting systems for free. Batteries Plus also sells automotive accessories like jumper cables, terminals, cleaners, and more to help ensure its customers are fully prepared to handle any battery problems caused by the heat or cold.
As a leader in battery recycling, Batteries Plus locations offer recycling of old lead acid, nickel cadmium, nickel metal hydride and lithium ion batteries through its Batteries Plus Recycling Program. Batteries Plus is partnering with Battery Solutions, Inc. an EPA approved recycling handler in complete compliance with all state and federal certifications and environmental laws, that offers companies and consumers an easier way to recycle electronics and batteries for little or no cost. Last year, Batteries Plus stores recycled more than 30 million pounds of lead acid batteries, and more than 1.2 million pounds of all other chemistries. Batteries Plus' goal is to be a net collector, recycling more batteries than it sells.
"Batteries Plus provides unmatched service and expertise, along with batteries of virtually every shape and size. I look forward to meeting the ongoing battery needs of the Auburn Hills community, from the consumer seeking simple batteries for common items or automotive needs, to the business owner or large entity needing ongoing, more complex battery services."
Batteries Plus has more than 500 locations in 46 states and Puerto Rico. The company sells 50 million batteries per year, serving more than 7.6 million customers annually.
Batteries Plus was designated by Inc. Magazine as the nation's fastest growing specialty retailer and ranked as the top battery franchise by both Entrepreneur Magazine and D&B AllBusiness.com. Batteries Plus stores also feature Tech Centers equipped to design, assemble, rebuild, and test custom battery packs.
Batteries Plus is a franchise leader in the expanding $30.7 billion U.S. battery category, estimated to reach $34.6 billion by 2014 and in the growing U.S. light bulb industry estimated to be at $14 billion.
