Amid one of the deepest retail slumps of the past two decades, there is one local branch of a national chain doing extremely well - selling what most would consider the most mundane of items.

Gary Little's two Batteries Plus stores (one in Anderson Township and one in Symmes Township) are both raking in record profits, spurred in part by new technologies but also by old-fashioned economics and a return to frugality by consumers.

Mike Burzminski, owner and operator of Batteries Plus stores in Mayfield Heights and Macedonia, has found success capitalizing on our addiction to gadgets.

Batteries Plus sells and installs more than 1,000 kinds of batteries - for cell phones and camcorders to wheelchairs and commercial tractors - with 12,000 more available from a warehouse in Wisconsin. "There are very few batteries we don't have or can't get," he said.

Common household items such as batteries and light bulbs can be purchased at nearly any big-box store, but specialty shops are growing by focusing on value.

At shops such as Batteries Plus, which stocks more than 1,000 types of batteries at three Oklahoma locations, and Light Bulb Supply, at 629 N Hefner Road, where one can find more than 2,500 kinds of light bulbs, operators say business is up.
"In a down economy, people aren't necessarily looking for the cheapest thing. They're looking for the best value," said Brandon Boozer, vice president of Oklahoma's Batteries Plus stores.
