Batteries Plus carries any type of battery you can imagine, from car batteries down to tiny discs for hearing aids. They also carry the batteries needed for the ever-popular Power Wheels toddler cars, which can't be found at toy and warehouse stores.
But the selection on any battery display at any store can be a bit overwhelming. Who knows the difference between alkaline and lithium, let alone nickel oxyhydroxide batteries?

Oklahoma City residents depended on the company's reach during the recent ice storm when batteries, especially for flashlights, were in short supply.
Boozer said Batteries Plus had "D" batteries air shipped in during the ice storm.
"We had a 4,000-pound battery shipment from Wisconsin," he said. "That was just to keep up with all the requests.

The average American is battery-operated, so Thomas Renner is looking to cash in.
Renner - owner of the month-old Batteries Plus store in Huntington Station along with his brother, Bill - says average Americans use up to 13 recyclable battery-operated devices from the time they open their eyes in the morning to the time they start their car. He lists some of the devices groggy Long Islanders grope for in the morning with the satisfaction of a man counting money: "The alarm clock, your watch, cell phone, laptop, PDA, car door opener, remote car starter, garage door opener, the remote for the TV . and I haven't even mentioned the toothbrush."

Jesse Martinez, owner of Batteries Plus in Melbourne, expects to ring up a lot of sales this winter.
"We have daylight savings time coming up this Sunday, and we suggest that people change the batteries in their smoke alarm at that time," Martinez said. "And then we have the holidays, and the big presents this year are all wireless or portable. We're going to be very busy."

The Topeka Fire Department reports that, in recent years 51% of residential fires occurred in residences, which had no smoke alarms (detectors) or inoperative smoke alarms. While 90% of all homes in the United States have smoke alarms, 20% of those alarms either have expired or missing batteries. Although smoke alarms will not save lives, they are designed to provide early warning to allow you to safely exit your home before the primary exits are blocked.
Smoke alarm batteries should be checked monthly and the batteries should be REPLACED twice each year.

SALEM – Batteries Plus, with locations in Nashua and Manchester, recently opened a new store in Salem.
The franchise, based out of Hartland, Wisc., began doing business in New Hampshire in November 2000. The new location employs six full-time workers.

Chuck and Helen Snyder purchased franchise rights to a Batteries Plus store when they were living in Wisconsin, where the retail chain is headquartered. Chuck Snyder grew up in Greenville, S.C., and spent time in Asheville as a child. When he saw that there was an opening for a Batteries Plus store in this area, he and his wife jumped at the chance to move.

CAMILLUS — After just a year in business, the local franchisee for Batteries Plus is opening a second store in Camillus.
Thomas Ruhlman opened his 2,400-square-foot store on Erie Boulevard in DeWitt in September 2006. He will open a second location, a 1,550-square-foot shop at 5310 W. Genesee St. in Camillus, in November.

ELGIN -- Joleen Rechkemmer might well have ended up managing a fast-food restaurant, but considered the field fairly well saturated as she was mulling business opportunities about 10 years ago.

You’ve heard of the guy who liked the product so much he bought the company. Warren Ptacek liked the concept so much, he bought a franchise — and now he’s opening his second Batteries Plus, this time in Longmont.
“Everybody needs batteries, and the interesting thing is when we first opened, there were people who came in and said, ‘You’re not going to be here next year,’” Ptacek said.
He was talking about his first Batteries Plus store in Fort Collins. That was nine years ago, and he said some of those naysayers have ended up being some of his steadiest customers, coming in every three or four months to stock up.

He is the proprietor of the first Batteries Plus store in South Jersey, a provider of batteries that power talking books for children, electronic voice boxes and keyless entry locks at hotels.
"We sell lots of batteries for hearing aids to nursing homes," he said. "We also rebuild batteries, as well as sell the batteries most people are familiar with, batteries for flashlights, cell phones and cameras."

The only batteries most people used regularly 12 years ago were in their watch and TV remote. Today, the average person might replace batteries in their cell phone, laptop, pedometer, toothbrush, garage door opener and mp3 player.
This increase in demand has enabled the father-and-son team of Jerry and Stephen Wiles to open six Batteries Plus stores in the Denver area, including their latest last month in Boulder.
“There are batteries everywhere; every place has them,” Jerry Wiles said. He and his son attribute their success to lucky timing and a two-tiered business model.
